Jasleen

* * *

This must be a female. She’s much smaller than him and doesn’t have the same spikes. I tried to get a better look at her, but this guy, Ugoki, wasn’t having it.

Their names are strange and I’m still trying to wrap my head around being able to understand them when they speak. There’s a slight accent, but I think it has more to do with how their jaws are shaped more than anything else.

“Svio. Go call the council. There are matters to be discussed.” His tone is commanding, and I wonder if all the males here are this way.

Do I really wait for this supposed council, or do I run? But where would I run to? Ugoki hasn’t harmed me so far and a tribe that carries a council tells me that there is some semblance of law and order.

If it wasn’t for the fact that this society seems intelligent despite them looking monstrous, I would be terrified. Instead, I’m just frustrated over the fact that he forced me here. But if this is what a civilized tribe looks like, I can only imagine what an uncivilized one is like...

When the female leaves us, Ugoki turns to me, and I take a step back. His size is so intimidating that I can’t help the way my eyes widen when he dips his head toward me again. It’s a strange movement, especially because of the way his body was built for battle, but endearing because it reminds me of the stray dogs back home.

Home. My eyes burn from the simple fact that I no longer have one now. I have no family. Nothing. If it wasn’t for me falling through that magical hole—because it had to be—I would be dead right now.

Ugoki lets out a low, rumbling vibration that pulls me from my thoughts. His eyes flick with colors of sage, a strange contrast to the bloodstains that still cover him.

“May I have the pleasure of your name, female?” he asks as he tilts his head slightly, nostrils flaring.

I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I have no other option at the moment. “Jasleen.”

His eyes blink a few times and his tail snaps behind him. I take another step back, unsure if I’m in danger or not.

“Jasleen,” his voice rumbles, and it is as if I can feel the vibration run right through me.

“Are you mated, Jasleen? Or do you usually wander the grounds courageously on your own?”

How those two sentences even connect, I have no clue. Mated?

“I-I’m not married, no. Mother let me hold off on that longer than she should have.” My breath hitches at the flashback of her death. “And it seems she’s paid dearly for it. They all did.”

I know it has nothing to do with it, but if I had been married, I would be living with my husband. Perhaps my mother would have traveled elsewhere or come with me? My mind goes through a million different scenarios but always comes back to the same conclusion: we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
